As interest in the SPECIMEN Plate Proofs of the early stamps of Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia increased, Norman Boyd recognized that little effort had been made to classify these issues according to the details of the overprints or the characteristics of the plates that printed them. The first edition of “Specimen Overprints of British North America” was his effort to make known information more permanent and more widely available. New material released from the archives of the American Banknote Company in September 1990 added very greatly to the knowledge of the field of Specimen overprints, particularly on the 12×l0 proof sheets of the 10d, 1/2d and 7 1/2d, and the need to completely rewrite the chapter on the 12×l0 Specimen Plates, resulting in the Second Edition. In honour of Norman’s passing in 1998, John Jamieson and the BNAPS Literature Committee felt the book should continue to be available to serious BNA collectors for years to come. This Third Edition contains the original text of the Second Edition, complete and unchanged as written by Norman, but some of the images have been improved.
