Earle Covert’s King George V Oval Die Postal Stationery Envelopes, shows the complete scope of King George V envelopes – Flat Plate, Embossed and Lined Hair varieties. These comprised Canada’s first full range of Regular. Precancelled, Private Order, Official and Election Envelopes. Included are the many Revalues on the stamps, as well as those with an additional stamp added to the envelope from other issues.
Earle Covert was the primary doctor in Hay River, Northwest Territories from 1964 to 1996. While serving as a scrutineer in the 1970 Northwest Territories election he noticed that there were specially prepared envelopes to send results to the candidates and obtained samples. On a visit to Edmonton a few years later he attended an Edmonton Stamp Club Spring Show and saw an ad for Jim Webb’s first edition of The Catalogue of Postal Stationery of Canada and Newfoundland. On buying a copy, he saw that his 1970 Election envelopes were not listed and wrote to Jim Webb. Over time this action led to Earle’s buying, with Bill Walton, the rights to the Webb catalogue, and ultimately to this new book on KGV Oval Die issues.
