From late 1972 until the fall of 1979 the late Lewis M Ludlow published detailed hammer studies of the Maritimes section of his Railway Post Office catalogue listings in his “BNA Topics” column, the R.P.O. COWCATCHER. Numerous members of the BNAPS R.P.O. Study Group continued to document those discoveries in the column and in the study group newsletter well into the 1990s. Ross Gray has consolidated the data developed, supplemented by his own additional research results, many of them achieved with the assistance of R.P.O. study group members, in “Railway Postmarks of the Maritimes”. He considers It a work in progress, providing a great deal of opportunity for further research and development.
Maritimes RPO hammers are presented in the order of the Listing Numbers assigned in the “Catalogue of Canadian Railway Cancellations and Related Railway Postmarks including Selected Waterway Postmarks”. An illustration and current data are given for each listing. If multiple hammers have been identified for a given listing, the differences between the hammers are illustrated graphically, with measurement data provided in an adjacent table.
