Until the year 1851 the Post office in Canada was an extension of the General Post Office of Great Britain, and it received its administrative direction exclusively from London. Nevertheless,-its importance had not entirely escaped the notice of its clientele nor the legislatures of the British North American colonies, where some attempts had been made to take over its administration. The purpose of this book is to compile in one convenient volume references to the Post Office Department in Canada found in-the printed legislative records of the old Province of Quebec (1763-1791), Upper and Lower Canada (1791-1840), the United Province of Canada (1841-1867) and Ontario and Quebec in the Dominion of Canada (1867-1925).
This inventory of the printed primary sources contains over 22OO references to Post Office activities in what are now Ontario and Quebec, and includes an index which provides access to relevant records by place name, personal and corporate name, operations and services. The references will be useful to those studying the history of the Post Office Department’s administrative organization, growth, processes, functions and services, as well as local history. 188 pages, .5″x11″, perfect bound |
