American-born Byron Harmon came to the Canadian Rockies in 1903 and soon knew he had found his calling. He became the official photographer and a charter member of the Alpine Club of Canada, soon producing pictures of places most of us would never get to see without his camera. An opportunity to share his work for profit created an entrepreneurial bonanza, as tourists began flocking to the railway hotels of the Canadian Pacific Railway at Banff and Lake Louise. Soon his works were available from newspaper vendors aboard the trains from Calgary to Vancouver, as well as in Banff, where Harmon centred his enterprises and photographic studios. Today, eighty years after his death, prints of his photographs are still available through the website of his granddaughter, Carole Harmon, and thousands of his post cards are listed individually on eBay.
