The Postal History of the Post Card in Canada, Allan L. Steinhart, 1979, Staple bound, 65 pages, 8.5 × 11, black and white, Stock # B4h923-024. Price: C$12.00.
The purpose of this study is to trace the history of the postal stationery card, private post card and pictorial view card from their first use in Canada on 1 June 1871 to 31 December 1911, the end of the Edwardian era. This time frame included the pioneer periods of all three types of cards in Canada and their development to the accepted forms which are still in use today. The author did not attempt to study the types of cards issued by the government and by private companies and publishers in detail, as the purpose of this work is to study basically the postal history and not the cards in a deltiologist’s manner. All of the cards illustrated are from the author’s collection. Except for the one excerpt from Howe’s Canada, all of the information was obtained from official post office documents and post office guides, and original research done by the author in his studies at the National Archives in Ottawa, at the National Postal Museum and other research institutions.
