Postage stamps commemorating the Olympic Games were first issued with the modern revival of the Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. Since then, stamps with Olympic themes have become staples of the Games culture and a topical emphasis for many collectors.Canada was no exception to this aspect of the Olympics after it bid successfully for the 1976 Summer Games to be held in Montreal, Quebec. The Canada Post Office launched an extensive stamp program that not only complemented regular issues but also enlisted many collectors to pursue opportunities to enhance their holdings. Stamps and related philatelic materials also served as a major fundraising effort to support the Olympiad.“First Day Covers of Canada’s 1976 Olympic Games Issues” first outlines the story of the Montreal Olympics with particular attention to the role played by the Canada Post Office, and then goes on to illustrate the numerous first day covers that were published by Canadian and U.S. makers. FDCs for stamps issued for two related events held in 1976, the Olympiad for the Physically Handicapped held in Toronto and the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria are also discussed. A representative sampling of FDCs for stamps issued by other countries commemorating the Montreal Games completes the study.
